Some live inside Microsoft Word and act as a drafting assistant for the lawyer doing the redline — Spellbook and Gavel Exec are the clearest examples. Others are built for in-house legal teams that review the same contract types over and over: they apply a playbook, mark up incoming paper automatically, and escalate only what falls outside policy. A third group is full contract lifecycle management (CLM) — platforms like Ironclad and SpotDraft that own intake, negotiation, e-signature, and the repository, with AI review as one feature among many.
Before comparing tools, decide which of those three shapes fits your work. A solo transactional lawyer needs a Word add-in, not a CLM implementation. An in-house team drowning in NDAs needs playbook automation. A company standardizing its whole contracting process needs the platform.
