AI legal research tools split along one important line: what the AI is grounded in. Thomson Reuters' CoCounsel answers from Westlaw and Practical Law content; Lexis+ AI grounds its drafting and conversational search in Shepard's-validated citations. Those are the incumbent research databases with generative AI layered on top. The challengers take a different route — Midpage built its own independent database of US case law, statutes, and regulations with an AI citator, while platforms like Harvey and Legora work across research, drafting, and document analysis without being tied to a single publisher's content.
The practical question when evaluating any of these: can you check the citations? The tools in this category compete on citation-backed answers precisely because unverifiable output is worthless in legal work. Litigation-focused platforms like Alexi and StrongSuit add research memos and brief drafting on top of the retrieval layer.
Most enterprise research tools do not publish pricing — expect a demo before you see a number. Paxton is a notable exception with a published per-user rate. Every tool below is verified active, and no vendor paid to be here or to rank.
